Goooooood Morning Mamas!
It’s that time again! MAMA MADNESS MONDAY!
I’ve come to really love doing this series. It’s honestly so fun to whine, moan, complain, rant, and rave about Mom Stuff to people who TOTALLY understand it! For some reason when I say this stuff to my husband he just says “uh huh” wompwomp…
Today I’d like to touch on something that bugs the SNOT out of me.
“Un-Teaching”
Example: I was taught to always say “Yes Ma’am, No Ma’am, Yes Sir, and No Sir” Apparently thats a Southern thing? BUT I can remember other people saying to me “Don’t call me Ma’am it makes me feel old.” Like it was offensive.
That person saying “Don’t call me Ma’am” is “Un-Teaching”.
And it drives me crazy.
As parents we have specific ways we want to raise our kids. Different things matter to different people, but as parents we work hard to instill certain principles in our kids. PLEASE don’t un-do it!
I totally understand that a lot of the time people don’t do this intentionally, HOWEVER if a parent specifically tells you they do or don’t do something respect that. Just because it’s not a big deal to you doesn’t mean it isn’t to someone else.
So. HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH AN UN-TEACHER?
Easy. SAY SOMETHING!
Like I said, most of the time folks aren’t doing this intentionally, but it does confuse kids. And for some reason when someone besides their parents tell a child to do or not do something it actually sticks, as apposed to when we tell them to do something over, and over, and over, and OVER.
So just like your husband doesn’t know he “forgot” to pick up the wine that you asked him in your mind to get, the “Un-Teacher” is also unaware (most of the time) of why you’re irritated. So actually tell them, out loud!
A simple “We like to do things this way as we feel that it is important to how we raise our children” will usually work.
Now, what do you do if you’ve said something before, but this person is continuing to “Un-Teach” your wee one?
Be FIRM. Let your mom know that even though she says it’s ok for your toddler to have candy before dinner that you said “No”, if she wants to give them candy she can do it AFTER dinner.
Speaking of candy, I’m going to go sneak some from Tommy’s Christmas candy!
Thanks for Reading! And Mama, don’t forget, it’s OK to go Mad sometimes!
Thanks for Reading, Commenting, Pinning, Sharing and Liking!

I totally agree! It irks me so much when someone corrects my child who is just being polite!

You hit my crazy button, too. The well intentioned “un-teachers” just have to be told that this is how we are raising our children. Thanks for this post. 🙂
