Good Morning Y’all!
It’s rise and shine time here in the Sunshine State! Time to get up, brush some teeth, make a nice hot pot of coffee and TAKE MY ACID REFLUX MEDICATION.
Wait what? haha
Probably NOT where you saw that going BUT that’s my daily routine. I have a chronic condition called “GERD” (Gastroesophageal reflux disease) think heartburn on steroids ALL THE TIME. I’ve been on a mission to control this not serious – but – definitely uncomfortable chronic illness for over 10 years, and the corner stone to being comfortable and not feeling ill on the daily, is taking my prescription as directed by my doctor.
While most people “watch what they eat” in terms of health/weight loss I “watch what I eat” so I don’t get sick. Certain foods agitate my reflux to the point of becoming physically ill, while other’s just agitate it enough to have to supplement my prescription with over the counter products. Either way I have a list of foods that I either avoid entirely or have to decide if I want to deal with the post eating discomfort for the next few hours.
Some of those are:
Romaine Lettuce
Donuts
Tomato Sauce (but not raw tomatoes – weird right?)
Pork (ESPECIALLY bacon)
Watermelon (which I LOVE and will just eat anyways)
Peanuts & Peanut Products
While an upset stomach might not seem like that big of a deal (and it really isn’t in the grand scheme of things) it IS something I have to take into consideration each and everyday. I mean think about what sorts of things you want to do when you are feeling nauseated. Nothing. You want to lay down and sleep so you don’t feel gross anymore. It slows you down. You don’t want to move around because then you might get sick. And with GERD a lot of the time I do get sick – especially if I miss my meds that morning. I can’t even tell you how embarrassing it is to have to excuse yourself suddenly to sprint to the bathroom and vomit. I’ve even had to do it on a first date. EW!
the facts
- Around 40% of Americans live with a chronic illness or condition.
- Close to 100 MILLION Americans don’t follow their prescription requirements correctly (usually due to forgetfulness, or lack of education about their meds)
- 33% of prescriptions are never filled.
Thankfully the Walgreens App has tons of features to assist me (and you) in proper medical adherence! Like their 24 hour chat that can answer any questions about your prescriptions that you may have, any time of day. I can set a Pill Reminder and refill my prescription in app too! They provide all the tools I need to make sure I’m following my doctors orders to the T. You can download the app HERE if you want to try it out for yourself.
